Huzzah! Now here is the kind of thing that makes a teacher happier than a kid with a new puppy... A project completely conceived of, worked on, and presented by students, for students. Yes, the PYP (Primary Years Programme) "Action" component completely done on student initiative!
We had done a very quick mini lesson in reading class on the different genres of books. I like to have students keep a record of their reading by filling in a genre graph recording all the genres they've read throughout the year, an idea I got from Beth Newingham. I've used this graph for the past few years and I love it as it is a quick visual telling me students are reading a nice range of different types of books.
A few of my students decided that a google presentation on genres would really help further clarify the idea for some of our ESL and other students, so they went for it! They did this all on their own time. Since all of the students at our school have their own google account under our school domain, they are able to collaborate with one another on projects at home using google docs . They worked on it several days, and when they got it finished they asked for a bit of our class time to present their project. I was very proud of them!
